HELPING CHILDREN RECOVER & IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF THEIR LIVES

My name is Sarah Collins. Libraries for Hospitals began after my daughter, Allie, was hospitalized for the onset of type 1 diabetes. At that time, she was just 4 years old, and admitted into the pediatric intensive care unit over Christmas. It was a life changing experience. The staunch reality of this life changing disease, juggling the magic of Santa with my other children, knowing the struggles of other families with children battling much more dire situations like leukemia and heart surgeries two and three doors down the hall. It was intense. In many ways, that’s when I became the mother I was always meant to be.

How to get involved & help children in need

There are many ways people can get involved! You can donate money through Amazon by shopping through AmazonSmile. Simply look for Libraries for Hospitals in the AmazonSmile nonprofit search box and choose us. You can donate as you shop!

You can also contact us at [email protected] to make a monetary tax deductible donation. You can choose to receive documentation upon receipt of the donation, at the end of the year, or both!

Other ways you can help:

  • Books – unlike other formats that do not accept used books, we accept both new and used books. We curate books towards various age groups with various interests, but also are working to expand resources for children staying in nursing homes. This way, the most materials can be used and repurposed for children.
  • Musicthe healing power of music is something everyone should be able to enjoy. That is why we accept any form of music donation. Children appreciate headphones of various designs and sizes.
  • Games – card games such as Uno, TacoCat, and Magic the Gathering, board games such as Bingo, Shutes and Ladders, Catan, checkers, and chess.
  • DVDsfavorite movies for children of all ages.

how reading & entertainment help children have improved recovery

Children thrive when they are in an environment that is engaging. It doesn’t matter if that is at home, in school, or even in a hospital. That is why providing children with engaging activities can help their mental wellbeing and improve their experience in recovery. Listening to great music that gets them in their zone, beating a level in a video game, or finishing their first chapter book is not only satisfying for body and mind, but also helps them continue to achieve their goals and grow in ways that can be translated into their physical and mental progress.

Recovery is not always crossing a finish line and then it’s over. Recovery includes the mental strength and endurance of the challenges we face, and the conditions we have in front of us.
